The Spider that tried to eat me

This guy decided to create a monstrosity of a web at the head of our driveway, partially blocking off the back entrance to the house. Thank God I spotted him from inside the car when I pulled up instead of when I walked into his web. *shudder*He's super creepy. Like, super duper creepy. I actually have a physical reaction when I look at these photos in original size.
Does anyone know what kind of spider this is? Will he kill me in my sleep? Because that's what I'm imagining.
I actually wanted to get a shot of him from below, you know, so that he looked like he was staring directly at me. However I decided that if I attempted that, the likelihood that he would decide to lower himself off his web and onto my face thereby killing me via cardiac arrest was significant. So I opted not to try.
But this shot, it both creeps me out to the ends of the Earth and rocks all at the same time.

You need to send these pics into a photo contest!! I bet they'd win something!

Oh my! That thing is terrifying. I don't mind spiders, but there isn't a reference in the photos and I imagine he's about as large as my guinea pig. In which case, I'm never going back to your house.

Definitely some type of orb weaver, but there are so many different kinds I couldn't tell you which this is. You shouldn't have to worry about it. It won't come chasing after you, but it will catch and eat lots of flying insects in its web. It may take down its web every day and rebuild nearby the next night. Due to their size, I would say that orb weavers are physically capable of biting (if you picked it up), but they're not known to have dangerous venom, probably just a sting. (I was playing with one once in sixth grade, and it did try to bite me, but I threw it down just in the nick of time.) For what it's worth, here is some random info I ran across about this class of spiders: http://www.termite.com/spider-identification.html#orbweaving.

Fantastic photos! I loved looking at them! I think these spiders are so majestic (but yes, kind of creepy!).
