Where's the turtle?

While we were at Heather's house a little turtle wandered into the backyard so Heather's grandmother put it in a crate so the girls could get a look at it. This was Kate's first up close encounter with a real live turtle.

Before we came close enough to him, he was crawling around the crate and poking his head and legs through the holes, trying his hardest to find a way out of that box. But the closer we got, he began to retreat into his safe shell. By the time Kate got all the way to him, he was completely hidden. Where did he go?

I picked him up so Kate could get a closer look, and she knew exactly where he was hiding but couldn't get him to come out to play. It was a fun learning experience for her and great fun for me to watch her explore something new.
