Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

I have a new favorite zoo.
We visited the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo today, which pretty quickly became one of my favorite zoos. Right when you enter the zoo grounds you see the giraffes, which is the largest herd of giraffes in the world, and they let you feed them! We bought some lettuce (instead of the usual giraffe crackers - they are on a diet) and fed them by hand. It was by far the coolest thing I have ever done at a zoo and I could have left right then and there and been totally content with my day.
The zoo is situated on the side of a mountain, so to see everything you end up walking uphill a lot. But the exhibits are wonderful and so natural. They just blocked off some spaces with fencing and didn't have to plant any trees or install any fake rocks for the animals, so after a while you don't really feel like you are at a zoo. It's really pretty cool. With all the trees everywhere, it's very shady and we didn't get too hot either.
We spent a great deal of time in the hippo house watching the zookeepers feed the hippos salad and fruits. Kate really enjoyed watching them swim around, and even tried to mimic their snorting sound. I loved the hippos too, and next to the giraffes it was another highlight of the day.One of the last exhibits we saw today was the primate house, and we let Kate run pretty free in there. She loves monkeys, so she kept pointing at them and doing her monkey imitation with her hands under her arms.
