Pumpkin time is finally arriving. I must admit, although Halloween is my favorite time of year I just haven't been "in the mood" up until today. I didn't even crawl up in the attic and pull my box of Halloween decorations down this year. I usually decorate almost as much as I do for Christmas, but with the warm weather we've been having it just hasn't felt like fall. Today we were blessed with some gray skies and cooler temps, and finally fall arrived. I actually wore a sweatshirt to the store tonight. It was awesome.
We got home from our trip to Home Depot and I crawled up in the attic to grab my bags of fake pumpkins, my carving apron, and my witch hat. I still didn't bring down my decorations. Halloween is less than 10 days away and even I can't justify putting out all that stuff when no one is going to see it but us and Heather. Call me lazy; I don't care.
I purchased 6 fake pumpkins last year after Halloween when they went on clearance. I carved a couple of them last year and like the fact that they're still around for me to enjoy, but they were difficult to carve with traditional pumpkin tools. That brings me to the trip to Home Depot tonight. I purchased a little Dremel tool for the sole purpose of carving my fake pumpkins. Now I know that I will use it for more than that, but for now that's its only purpose in my life. I couldn't get the cheapest model either. I had to buy the nice but compact one that will be easier for me to do some intricate moves. I'm hoping that it's a fairly easy tool to use. I've used a Rotozip for years, so this shouldn't be any more difficult. I am kinda of wondering how usedful it might be with a real pumpkin, and not just the fake ones. Yes, I fully intend to carve real ones too. It's just not Halloween without that.
I usually pick a theme and try to do at least 3 pumpkins in that theme. 2005 brought the Harry Potter series and I did 6 of those. Last year I did a couple of Pirates of the Caribbean and a couple of Calvin & Hobbs. This year, so far we've planned a Star Wars series and I think I'm going to do a few Peanuts pumpkins. I'm not sure how many we'll do this year. Last year we only managed to get 13 done by Halloween night, and I'd really like to have more than that. We're going to spend Halloween with Nick's family and combine our carving efforts with theirs, so I'm hoping the yard is pretty full of pumpkins. Yeah, we rock.

I'm with you - haven't done any Halloween decorating yet because it's been too hot to feel like Fall. Today it's much cooler though, first time it has actually felt like it's really October!
Clever idea getting the Dremel for the pumpkins! You can also use your new Dremel tool on your dog's nails instead of clipping them. I haven't tried it myself, but lots of people on the Dog board say it's great.
I can't WAIT to see your pumpkins!!! Dawson will definitely be trying to persuade me to trying STAR WARS if he sees them! :D

I've been looking forward to seeing what you do this year. :~) I haven't decorated a thing. We just went to the patch today and got our pumpkins. I still haven't decided exactly what Elly will dress up as yet either. :~|
