Road trip: Lambert's Cafe

Grandpa Jim had told us while we were going to be in the area we should stop at Lambert's Cafe in Foley, Alabama and eat. They are famous for being the "home of the throwed roll". Turns out it's just about an hour and a half from Navarre Beach so we left there in time to eat lunch. (We got a little distracted on the way, but that will be another post.)
Talk about yummy.
Their famous roll throwing is no joke. It's a very laid-back, family style atmosphere...noisy, busy, always a line. Great if you have kids because they don't need to be quiet in here.  Every so often a couple of roll boys walk into your area with a cart of fresh, hot rolls and one of the shouts "Hot rolls!" at which point you raise your hand and they throw you one...sometimes from across the room. These rolls are bigger than softballs! And delicious??! Oh yes. A lady also walks around with molasses and apple butter in buckets that she will slap right on your roll for you. There's a guy walking around with a bucket of fried okra, someone has noodles in tomatoes, and another guy was walking around with fried potatoes. It was all so yummy!
Not to mention that your dinner plate is huge and you get two additional sides with your entree. I ordered the charbroiled lemon pepper chicken (whole chicken) and Nick had catfish. Kate had a cheeseburger, and we went home with enough to reheat for dinner that night too. They also bring your beverage out in one of those 64 ounce travel mugs that you see in truck stops.

I don't even know if they have a dessert menu - who could eat dessert after all that??

It was fun and I'm glad we were close by to get to experience it! There are two other locations in Missouri, I read. Definitely a must if you're in the area!
